As a pharmacist, I am always trying to keep up with the most up to date medical information.  My inbox is usually full of new drugs on the horizon, dosing information, and clinical guidelines.  Needless to say, I was thrilled when I saw this title staring at me from my inbox: Moderate Chocolate Consumption Linked to Lower Risk for Heart Failure in Women.  You can read the full article from Circulation (Journal of the American Heart Association) here

Here’s the summary.  The study included over 30,000 middle-aged Swedish women who did not have a history diabetes, heart failure, or heart attack.  Those who consumed 1 – 3 servings per month had a 25% reduction in heart failure risk, and those that consumed 1 – 2 servings per week had a 30% reduction in heart failure risk.  The authors did note that higher intake did not have a protective effect.

The cocoa in chocolate is a good source of flavonoids, which may protect your heart.  However, it was noted that chocolate consumed in the US likely contains less cocoa than that consumed by the Swedish women in the study.

So do your heart a favor, if you’re going to have some chocolate, reach for the dark stuff.  It will have a higher cocoa content and more flavonoids.  Also remember, everything in moderation.

My favorite is Lindt Excellence A Touch of Sea Salt
